A sick calf gets a shot on Monday. The label says another dose in 48 hours. By Wednesday afternoon you’re fixing a water line, and nobody remembers whether it was Monday morning or Monday night — or which calf it was.

Missed follow-up doses mean animals that don’t get well. Lost withdrawal dates are worse: selling an animal before its withdrawal is up risks a residue violation at the packer. A simple record system fixes both.

What to write down for every treatment

Write downWhy
Date and timeFollow-up doses are counted in hours
Animal ID (tag)So the next dose goes to the right one
What you saw (temperature, signs)Tells you and your vet whether it’s working
Product and lot numberIf there’s ever a problem with a batch
Dose, route and injection siteUnder the skin or in the muscle, and where
Who gave itSo questions get answered
Withdrawal clear dateThe day she can be sold for slaughter

Counting the withdrawal date

The meat withdrawal time on the label is counted from the last dose, not the first. If a three-dose treatment ends on the 10th and the label says 28 days, she isn’t clear until the 7th of the next month. If a veterinarian prescribes a different dose or route than the label, ask them for the withdrawal time that goes with it — it may be longer.

Give it right the first time

  • Use the dose on the label, or the one your veterinarian gives you. Weigh or tape the animal if you can — guessing weights is how most dosing mistakes happen.
  • Follow Beef Quality Assurance practice: give injections in the neck, in front of the shoulder, and use the under-the-skin route when the label allows it.
  • Don’t put too much in one spot. Many labels give a most-per-site amount; split bigger doses into more than one spot.
  • Keep products at the temperature on the label and check expiration dates.

A system that actually gets used

The best record system is the one that’s in your hand when you’re at the chute. That can be a clipboard in the truck — our free treatment & withdrawal log has a column for every item above — or it can be your phone.

In Ranch Smarter, you snap the tag, pick the product (its label rate and withdrawal days are already saved), type the dose from the label, and tap “I just gave the first dose.” Every follow-up dose shows up on your Today screen when it’s due, and the withdrawal date is worked out and shown on her record — and on the sick pen list — until she’s clear.

Ranch Smarter never suggests doses. All doses, schedules and withdrawal times come from what you enter. Check every dose against the product label or your veterinarian’s directions.

Ranch smarter, not harder

Ranch Smarter puts your records, reminders and ranch math on your phone — and it works where there’s no signal.
